Mercury Accumulation in Food Crops and Phytoremediation Potential of Wild Plants Thriving in Artisanal and Small-Scale Gold Mining Areas in Uganda

Mercury (Hg) has been used for millennia in artisanal and small-scale gold mining (ASGM) to extract from ore as an amalgam that is heated recover gold. Since there hardly any sustainable technology can be it, the vast percentage of released Hg finds its way into environment. Currently, ASGM largest source mercury pollution on Earth. listed among top 10 most harmful metals by World Health Organization (WHO), it known cause several neurological disorders humans. Thus, levels environmental systems surrounding hotspots such mines need monitored ensure their proper management protect vulnerable ecosystems human health. This work was aimed study level soils plants thriving around Eastern Uganda evaluate phytoremediation potential plants.
